(2009)
Idris Elba as Arthur Wyndham
After seeing David Goyer's supernatural horror film, it's easy to dismiss Elba's very brief involvement--roughly about 15 minutes, all in the final act--as an easy paycheck gig. And perhaps in an obvious way it was, his large stature making him a no-brainer cast for a man of the cloth who gets rather inconveniently demonically possessed for the big climactic finish. But, as with something like Prom Night, some reading between the lines reveals a method to apparent madness. While Goyer's directorial C.V. may not be the most stellar, his as a screenwriter most certainly is, and it definitely would not hurt to be on his radar for when he's writing a script. But perhaps most importantly, all of his few scenes are opposite Gary Oldman, and what serious and smart actor would pass up the chance to work alongside an all-time great for a few days, in a film that had such potential commercial upside?
